Ganondagan State Historic Site located in Victor, NY is a National Historic Landmark, the only New York State Historic Site dedicated to a Native American theme (1987), and the only Seneca town developed and interpreted in the United States. Spanning 569 acres, Ganondagan is the original site of a 17th century Seneca village, that existed here for more than 350 years ago before being destroyed in 1687 by the French. The culture, art, agriculture, and government of the Seneca people influenced our modern understanding of equality, democratic government, women’s rights, ecology and natural foods.
Ganondagan’s full-size, Seneca Bark Longhouse (1998) is fully furnished to reflect a typical Seneca family from the late 1600’s, complete with reproductions of 17th century Seneca objects and colonial-era trade goods.
State of the art museum and cultural center. My family is grateful to have such a lovely resource available to keep us connected. We live away from our home reserve but within driving distance to Ganondagan and attend as many events as able. Nia:wen!
Came here for the Indigenous music & arts festival. Wonderful place. A lot of great exhibits inside the center, and the festival had a lot of fantastic performances. I would absolutely come back to check out other exhibits or events here!
Beautiful facility. The museum, long house and trails are outstanding! Worth the visit in many ways. Great for adults and children!
Stunning! My history class from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) visited this site as part of our week-long research trip around Central New York, and the experience we had here learning about the Haudenosaunee is one that we will never forget. I would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff here at Ganondagan, and especially to our tour guide Cole for sharing his time, energy, knowledge, and experience with us. Cole, you must let me know when you start releasing music!
In all seriousness, folks, this historic location is an absolute must-see! The experience we had here on our guided tour was deeply inspirational, and even emotional, at times. Don’t pass up on the opportunity to learn about the Haudenosaunee!
A very special place. So much history og the Seneca people. Great trails.
We went on a beautiful sunny day. It was a Tuesday So unfortunately the center was closed.
However, we walked the entire area reading the plaques as we went.
We wished we had brought our lunch as there were picnic tables that were accessible.
The milkweed was in full display.
Just a beautiful informative day
Must see museum to explore the rich history of the land! This place was more amazing than I expected! Bring the family! Nice museum with plenty of artifacts to see and read about. They have a nice 10 minute little theatre about the Creation Story. Parking was easy, and you’ll have a little walk up the museum. The actual longhouse was closed (I visited during winter months) but you can still go up and see it. Cute little gift shop as well! I definitely will be visiting again with my son! Nayoh ❤️
